The next generation of Dead Milkmen fans has arrived!

September 13, 2007 · Leave a Comment

While playing my 12 String Yamaha acoustic guitar, I recklessly careened through a bunch of songs from the 1980s. I pulled “Punk Rock Girl” and “Big Lizard In My Backyard” out of my memory.  Ihad to make it the clean version as my children are all under 10, but it went over very well.  They had formed what was the embryonic stage of a mosh pit. My sons and daughters were “whoopin’ it up.”

Afterwards, I was hit with “Hey, Dad. What was that song you were playing?”

I am thinking tomorrow’s music lesson may include The Cramps.

I don’t think anyone could fill his shoes  glasses. His work with Match Game and Hollywood Squares will be studied by comics for years.

A Public Service Announcement from the Department of Homeland Maturity

December 13, 2006 · Leave a Comment

For those of us old enough to remember when corduroy parts and polyester shirts were the fashion, we have instructed by the Federal Government to provide important information to the younger generations. It may not be life-saving tips, but still very helpful.

 1) The current popular song, Gone Daddy Gone, by Gnarles Barkley is actually a cover of a song originally done by the Violent Femmes on their first album, released in 1983.

2) Just a reminder: the stuff Madonna isn’t new. It’s called disco, and she was there for it the first time, too.

3) When car dealership commercials tell you that you don’t have to be “trapped” with payments on your current car (and still own on it) THEN tell you that if you buy one of their cars that they will PAY YOURS OFF. Don’t get excited. You still get to be “trapped” with paying that, too. However, you are just giving money to Dealership #2 instead of Dealership #1. It’s called NEGATIVE EQUITY, not FREE MONEY.

Suzanne Vega has a website

Suzanne Vega website links

This woman is incredibly talented and has a great voice. Unfortunately, I was only able to really get into her first two albums. Her first album, Suzanne Vega is an interesting batch of songs that, to me, induce all sorts of mental pictures when I listen to it. The second album, Solitude Standing has a much fuller sound, but still is very simple. While I have never grown tired of hearing “Luka,” as some may have; “Ironbound” is also a great song, too. The rest of the album is good, but begins to lose the appeal. Like I said, she does great stuff but for some reason, I never really kept up with listening to her stuff.

Greetings To The New Brunette

This song rocks. Write that down.

My favorite lines from the song (at the 2:40 mark):

“Here we are in our summer years
Living on ice cream and chocolate kisses
Would the leaves fall from the trees
if I was your old man and you were my missus?”

Martha Quinn, Where are you?!?!

September 28, 2006 · Leave a Comment

For those of you old enough to remember when MTV (music television) actually played music videos, I have discovered something very cool. It seems that bands like Missing Persons, Iron Maiden, Pretenders, Duran Duran, BlancMange, Stan Ridgeway, and XTC live again. Only this time, as really small, grainy video footage converted to the computer. If you enlarge the screen, the sound quality is still there, but the visual quality drops to less than the Zapruder film (an even older reference than the MTV one!!)

Here are links to some of my favorite videos. Enjoy!

Shadow Of Love by The Damned

Senses Working Overtime by XTC

Talk Of The Town by The Pretenders

Living On The Ceiling by Blancmange
